Message Summary

Starting mid-late February 2024, commercial data protection will be available for users with the following eligible licenses when they are signed in to Copilot with their work account (Microsoft Entra ID):

  • Office 365 E5
  • Office 365 E3
  • Office 365 E1 Plus
  • Office 365 E1
  • Office 365 F3
  • Microsoft 365 F1
  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise
  • Microsoft 365 Apps for business
  • Microsoft 365 Business Basic

Commercial data protection in Copilot will be available to these users at no additional cost.

The “Commercial data protection for Microsoft Copilot” service plan will also be available to manage commercial data protection in Copilot.

When this will happen:

Timing:

  • Mid-late February:
    • Commercial data protection will be available in Copilot for eligible users when they are signed in with their work account.
    • The “Commercial data protection for Microsoft Copilot” service plan will also be available.

How this will affect your organization:

Your eligible users will be able to access Copilot with commercial data protection from:

  • Copilot.microsoft.com desktop/mobile
  • Copilot in Bing (bing.com/chat) desktop/mobile
  • Copilot in Microsoft Edge desktop/mobile
  • Copilot in Windows desktop only where available
  • The Copilot, Bing, Microsoft Start, and Microsoft 365 mobile apps.

Eligible users must be signed in to Copilot with their work account (Microsoft Entra ID) to receive commercial data protection.

What you need to do to prepare:

No action is required to keep commercial data protection turned on for your users once it becomes available in mid-late February. We recommend that your eligible users sign in to Copilot with their work accounts once commercial data protection is available. Adoption materials can be found here: Adoption Kit

If you would like to turn commercial data protection off, you must disable the service plan. By turning commercial data protection off, your organizational data may be inadvertently leaked. We do not recommend turning commercial data protection off in Copilot.

For further details, please see our technical documentation: Copilot documentation.
