Message Summary

Updated June 10, 2022: Please review the blog post: Apply sensitivity labels to PDFs created with Office apps for additional details.

Coming soon to public preview, we’re introducing the ability to maintain label and protection for PDF files created from Microsoft Office apps.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 88516.

When this will happen:

Public preview: rollout will begin in late June and is expected to be complete by late July.

How this will affect your organization:

Labels and protection applied on Office documents will be persisted to the output file when converting to PDF in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on PCs using File|SaveAs, File|Export, and File|Share Office add-ins.

What you need to do to prepare:

To enable users to label PDFs created in Office, admins can create sensitivity labels and define policies and settings in the Microsoft Purview compliance portal.

To try this functionality in a test tenant and provide early feedback to Microsoft, we invite you to join a limited private preview. Sign up at https://aka.ms/MIP/PreviewRing.
